1. Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site
Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield Site is about the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads. Here, Confederate forces led by Nathan Bedford Forrest defended against a bigger Union force.
The Civil War battle was fought to keep the supply lines open. It was a fight to make sure General Robert E. Lee could get into Tennessee and not be stopped by Sherman’s army that had been fighting him in Georgia since May 1864.
Pets: If you love animals, this is the perfect place to visit. You can walk your pet on a leash that is 6 feet long.
Camping: The Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site has campgrounds for people who want to getaway.
Tour: The Brice’s Cross Roads National Battlefield Site is a special place to explore. People can find a lot of history there.
Entrance Fee: The Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site is a free place where people can learn about the Civil War. People can find out how it impacted Tennessee and what happened there.
2. Gulf Islands National Seashore
The Gulf Islands National Seashore is a place for people who want to learn about the Earth. It has museums and beaches. You can become an islander on your own private island!
The Park Service is from Pensacola Beach all the way up to Pascagoula Bay. They protect parts with land and also seven islands. The islands have habitats that are important ecologically because they are part of the environment.
Pets: Gulf Islands National Seashore is a place where you can bring your dog. You must keep your dog on the leash and on the trail or paths, not on the road.
Camping: Gulf Islands National Seashore is a good place to go for camping. There are two campgrounds that are near the coast and have everything you need. You can come by car or boat.
Tour: Gulf Islands National Seashore has a lot of things to do. You can go outside and kayak on the Gulf or go hiking through the dunes. Or you could stay inside and do arts and crafts or bird watching from your window. There are also many tours you can take such as one about wildlife conservation.”
Entrance Fee: Gulf Islands National Seashore entrance fees are $25 for a car. If you come by bike or on foot, they charge $15 per person. For motorcycles, it is only $20.
3. Natchez National Historical Park
Natchez National Historical Park has three locations that you can visit. You should go see Fort Rosalie because the French people were there, and it was a place for good times and bad things to happen. It is now managed by our friends at the National Park Service!
Natchez is a town in America. It has a lot of history. France used to own it, but now it’s part of the United States. People like to come to visit Natchez because they can walk around and see different houses that are really old.
Pets: At Natchez National Historical Park, you can bring your dog. They must be on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet.
Camping: There are many campsites near the National Historical Park. Some of these campsites have RV hookups so you can sleep in your car, and most have places to take a shower or go to the bathroom.
Tour: Natchez National Park is a good place for people who like history. You can learn about the civil war, visit historic homes and plantations, like Fort Rosalie or Melrose Plantation. Plus you can see beautiful natural beauty by driving on Highway 61.
Entrance Fee: Natchez National Historical Park is a park with an entrance fee. Adults pay $10 and get unlimited access to the monuments, or students can have free admission when they are accompanied by their teachers or parents.
4. Natchez Trace Parkway
The Natchez Trace is a historic, 440-mile trail that links the Cumberland River to the Mississippi. Along this journey are many natural borders, such as rivers and mountains.
Native Americans used to go west from Alabama to trade with other tribes, but now they don’t. That was a long time ago when people walked instead of driving on roads. They would walk through it and over rivers made of water.
Pets: Pets can go outside in nature with a leash of up to six feet long. They can walk along scenic trails that lead through Tennessee’s beautiful scenery.
Camping: You can only camp in specific places. It is not allowed to just camp anywhere. You must have a permit to do this, and it is only allowed in special areas.
Tour: The Natchez Trace Parkway is a must-do for any true explorer. This parkway has trails that go to the Trail of Tears and other places near Tupelo, MS. You can stay in your RV or tent while exploring the Natchez Trace Parkway!
Entrance Fee: The Natchez Trace Parkway is a road in the United States. There are no entrance or camping fees. The parkway has campgrounds for people who want to stay in their car.
5. Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail
The Natchez Trace Trail is a long trail that starts in Tennessee and goes through Alabama and Mississippi.
The path from Nashville goes to Mobile Bay in Alabama. It has many scenic stops along the way.
Pets: The Natchez Trace Trail is a good place for dogs to play. They can run around and have fun without being on a leash.
Dog owners can go on a trail with their dogs. They get exercise and their dog has fun too.
Camping: Camping on the Natchez Trace Trail is not allowed outside of campgrounds. The only time you can camp is in an emergency situation, and you need to ask permission from the land manager first.
Tour: If you want to go on a hike, try the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. It is a long trail with many places to explore. There are self-guided walks and hiking trails too.
Entrance Fee: You don’t have to pay anything to see all the beautiful things on the Natchez Trace Parkway. You can walk in a nice forest and see all sorts of animals.
6. Shiloh National Military Park
Shiloh National Military Park is a place where visitors can see the battlefields from two of America’s most important battles during the Civil War. People can walk among monuments, markers, trenches, and other things.
The Union won a battle near historic Savannah, Tennessee. There is more land southeast of the city of Corinth. This is also where the Union won a battle and helped end Confederate control over Tennessee-Kentucky territory.
Pets: Dogs are welcome in the national park. You have to keep them on a leash. But you can let them off the leash inside buildings, and at the military cemetery. Everywhere else, they can run around and play too!
Camping: Shiloh National Military Park is in Tennessee. There are no camping or lodging options on-site, but travelers can stay at the park’s lodge and cabins. This will give you an unforgettable experience with nature.
Tour: There are lots of displays in the Shiloh National Military Park. There are also exhibits and interesting things to do like walking around or driving. Rangers can tell you about these things too!
Entrance Fee: Shiloh National Military Park is a free place where you do not need to pay an entrance fee. People can go there for free.
7. Tupelo National Battlefield
A Mississippi battlefield is home to a historic battle site. An American Civil War battle site is here, which was fought on July 14th and 15th 1864.
There was a battle in the morning. Union soldiers fought Confederate soldiers. Brooksville was the location of that battle, but Confederates fought back. Friday there was also a battle and Union soldiers won without much fighting.
Pets: Tupelo National Battlefield is a good place to go with your dog. There are trails that dogs can walk on and there are also water dishes. It’s a perfect place for you and your pup!
Camping: Tupelo has campsites for those visitors who would like to experience nature but do not want to sleep on the ground. You can stay in a tent or bring your own gear.
Tour: Tupelo National Battlefield is a part of American history. You can visit the battlefield and spend a weekend in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Entrance Fee: You can visit Tupelo National Battlefield for free! It is fun to go and see.
8. Vicksburg National Military Park
The Battle of Vicksburg National Military Park is a historic place. It has the battlegrounds where Union soldiers fought with Confederate soldiers for control over this city, which was important.
The memorial at the park, along with many monuments to soldiers who died in battle, commemorates not only those who died but also those who served and their families.
Pets: People can bring their pets to the park. This is fun for them and people enjoy it too.
Camping: You cannot stay inside Vicksburg National Military Park, but you can find accommodations in the city of Vicksburg and the surrounding area.
Tour: You can walk, hike, and bike at Vicksburg National Military Park. You will also be able to hire someone who knows what happened in this time period and share their story. Living History programs are offered with ranger-led activities on weekends including presentations about cooking during this time or exploring Civil War medicine!
Entrance Fee: The Vicksburg National Military Park has a fee of $15 for each car. People who visit often have to wait in long lines on hot days.
